European Air Traffic Safety Conference

June 11, 2015

Air traffic safety in Europe is excellent, and air traffic is still the safest type of transport, stressed today Franck Brenner, EUROCONTROL’s Director General after opening the ANSP CEOs’ Safety Conference hosted by Croatia Control Ltd (CCL) in the hotel Le Meridien Lav, Split.

More than 80 Chief Executive Officers and Safety Managers from 30 air navigation service providers (ANSPs) attended the conference and discussed the safety issues with the aim of reducing the safety risks. Every two years EUROCONTROL organizes the conference within the framework of the ES² program – Experience Sharing to Enhance Safety.

The main role of EUROCONTROL is the one of Network Manager, and in cooperation with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) we monitor the safety situation and undertake air traffic safety measures including the closing airspace over conflict areas such as eastern Ukraine, part of Libya and Syria, said Brenner. The traffic in Europe is constantly growing, which is good both for the economy and the travelers, but it is our obligation to keep them safe, added Brenner.

Dragan Bilać, CCL’s Director General, stressed that Croatia has been the member of EUROCONTROL for 15 years and that it has been implementing the European safety standards. According to him, within the framework of the Single European Sky the European Commission defined the performance management requirements to be fulfilled by the ANSPs. He added that a balance should be reached among the four key performance areas, i.e. between safety, environment, capacity and cost-efficiency, since the European Commission demands the improvements in all four areas.

Besides the EUROCONTROL representatives, the conference was also attended by the representatives from air traffic organizations (ICAO and IATA) as well as the representatives from the Croatian Civil Aviation Agency, Air, Maritime and Railway Traffic Accidents Investigation Agency and Croatia Airlines.
